Umbane is a sustainable development investment enterprise focused on renewable energy. We originate, develop, finance, and own projects from conception through commissioning. Our competitive advantage lies in combining deep technical expertise with innovative capital structures and patient R&D investment. This integrated approach—spanning due diligence, development, financial closure, and operations—delivers superior risk-adjusted returns while maintaining prudent exit strategies.Core Business Model: Renewable Energy Investments - We, mostly, acquire and seldom wholly originate utility-scale projects with long-term power purchase agreements, targeting financial closure within 9-24 months from the acquisition date. Each investment undergoes rigorous due diligence (both internally and independently) and often requires additional bankability enhancing project development before Investment Committee approval, with a minimum 15% ZAR IRR threshold.
Infrastructure Innovation - We develop and operate novel projects/technologies or financial instruments such as agrivoltaics, floating solar, small commercial and industrial portfolios and ungeared projects, amongst others. These transactions command higher returns (18%+ IRR minimum) due to their embedded esoteric structuring, while offering greater exit flexibility to complement our longer-hold core investments.
We do what we do because we believe in building change that lasts. We chose industries at the very foundation of Africa’s growth. These industries create ripple effects that uplift communities, unlock opportunity, and bring us closer to overcoming poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The foundation of our vision lies in the Sustainable Agriculture, Water and Energy (SAWE) nexus. These are the base industries that feed life into every other part of the economy. Agriculture ensures food security and creates livelihoods. Water sustains both people and production, while energy powers every step of progress. When strengthened together, they unlock a powerful economic multiplier one that creates jobs, stimulates enterprise, and attracts further investment. This is how the SAWE nexus uplifts society: it not only drives economic growth but also ensures that growth is inclusive. Farmers gain stable markets, households gain access to resources, young people gain opportunities for work, and communities gain the dignity of self-reliance. By multiplying value across sectors, the nexus reduces poverty, narrows inequality, and provides a pathway out of unemployment. In this way, the SAWE nexus becomes more than infrastructure—it becomes a foundation for transformation.
At Umbane Energy Investments, we are more than just a clean infrastructure developer—we are catalysts for sustainable transformation across Southern Africa. Here's why partnering with us makes a meaningful difference:SAWE-Centric ImpactWe design every project to create positive feedback loops between Sustainable Agriculture, Water security, and clean Energy (SAWE). This approach maximizes land productivity, conserves resources, and reduces carbon intensity, ensuring that our solutions address the interconnected challenges of food, water, and energy security.Innovative Capital StackingWe blend concessional, catalytic, and commercial capital to unlock projects that conventional financiers often overlook. By de-risking early-stage investments, we attract private capital at scale and accelerate the adoption of frontier technologies, making impactful projects financially viable.Future-Proof TechnologyOur solutions are rigorously validated in both academic and field settings, ensuring they outperform over their full asset life. From bifacial agrivoltaics to floating solar, we deploy only innovations that deliver measurable resilience and long-term value, ensuring sustainability and reliability.Proven Track RecordWith a growing portfolio of over 700 MW in development across Southern Africa, including projects in Namibia and South Africa, we have demonstrated our ability to deliver large-scale, impactful energy solutions.
